What's the legality behind sharing an audio file of a song that used to be offered free on an artist's website

What's the legality behind sharing an audio file of a song that used to be offered free on an artist's website, but isn't any longer? Not a huge concern for me, but I'm curious. I ume it would still be technically illegal due to copyright laws, uming the band is signed to a record label. Am I right?
