~There is much beauty in modesty~ (edited) ... a poem about arrogance...:) Hope you enjoy!?
I am put in mind of Thoreau's maxim: "Simplify, simplify, simplify!" I agree with your sentiment, but should add that sometimes, whether writing verse or prose, the best word to use may be an unfamiliar one, often because its connotative sphere is sufficiently broad to capture all the manifold glory of your ideas. We should aim for economy of expression, and yet not spare expression as poets. My rule of writing is to begin with what I wish to convey and then, as the thought is formed, consider my message as a whole as well as its intended audience. I've made the remark before that what I write is "not for all markets," nor do I intend it to be; we select our audience by the decisions we make. And yet, the core of our message should be widely comprehensible, indeed we should paint it in images, in tone, and even in the rhythm of what we write, whether it be poetry or prose. There is indeed more sentiment in a simple untrammeled phrase, spoken from the still point of being, than in the writing of all our philosophers, and perhaps more truth as well. Excellent and thoughtful poem, and one improved by the editing you've done.
