Can you die from lack of sleep?

i just watched a trailer for christian bale's movie, the machinist, and at one point his character said he hadn't slept in over a year. can you really survive that long with no sleep? i know youll probably go insane and hallucinate like bale's character did, but can you survive with no sleep?
